What are the seedings for the Olympics and when will the draw be made?

Will Kruse and Emmanuel be bottom seeds, because they were wildcards, or will RK be ahead because of his fie ranking? I assume that, if Kruse is bottom seed (26th), he would face the 7th seed in an incomplete L32?

The title of this document from the FIE website (front page) suggests it might be relevant:

http://www.fie.ch/download/homepage/en/placement%20and%20drawing%20at%20the%202008%20OG.p df

looks like they use FIE rankings Aug 1st 2008 - but they are "adjusted" so I don't know what that means.

If it's like World Cups, there's an element of randomisation in the top 16 seeds, usually (I think) a movement of 1 place either way

What does this mean?

4) As soon as all the fencers have an initial classification, we will carry out a
drawing of lots in pairs, from the first to the last fencer.

What does this mean?

You draw the fencers in pairs then randomise.

So you'd take fencer 1 and 2, toss a coin and the winner takes 1st seed, loser 2nd seed, then take fencer 3 and 4, toss a coin and the winner takes 3rd seed, loser 4th seed.

As tigger says this happens at world cups for the top 16, but it is done all the way down at the Olympics - presumably to restrict collusion.

Thought so, thanks for that :thumbs_up

Do we know when this drawing will actually take place?

Have we seen it yet?? or has some geek worked it out anyway (that is worked out who Alex Richard and Martina are likely to get - can only be one of two right)

Dear All,

I am guessing but I think it will be done the day before the Olympics starts.

Last time they had a very large screen to show ther draws etc.

I haven't looked at Martina, or Alex although I am sure someone will have.

When we looked at Richard and the foil ranking, the draw was between Saliscan ROM and Schlosser AUT.

The issue with Baldini will not have impacted this but may have so effect on his second round draw.

Good luck to Richard and to his support team in Bejing.

Apparently Byrne knows her draw http://www.rte.ie/sport/2008/0807/byrnes.html - so it must be kicking around somewhere??

That's convieniently the same as if it wasn't drawn by lots. (30 vs 35) vs 3.

Kruse has got Saliscan of Romania (world number 34). They have fenced once before, last season, and Richard lost. Should he prevail he would fence Joppich in the 16. If he gets through that, and obviously beating the 3x world champ is a BIG if, he actually has a good chance of a medal as the top half of the draw looks harder.

Alex has Kovalev (world number 25) they have never fenced. Kovalev is only two years older- but has won GP medals...

Martina has the American Erin Smart.

Good luck

Some fabulous MS QFs potentially... Montano v Podznyakov, Covaliu vs Limbach... and Tarantino v O'Connell (crosses everything)

If it is Pozd versus Montano that's the end of him retaining his title. Pozd spanks him every time I've seen them fence.

He beat him three times last year in Padova, Gent (the Europeans) and in St. Petersburg. Wiped the floor with him in Leipzig I seem to remember aswell.

No better time to break the trend than next Tuesday then.
