I'm currently sitting in a hide in the reed beds near Stansted waiting for kingfisher and news of the poules from this morning. No news from daughter which normally means one thing.... early shower.

At least the girls are fencing, Kirsty is devastated after her early morning flight from Edinburgh developed 'technical difficulties' and did not take off until after the flight to Bratislava had left. Tried to get another flight but nothing available.

She is so upset and out of pocket by 400 (trip cost, return flights to Edinburgh and overnight stay at an airport hotel on the way back). She will probably be fined by the FIE for not turning up as well.

I don't think being ranked 63 after the poules and then taking the No2 seed out is 'having an eary shower'. Well done...So far Tubby Jnr!

Well done Caitlin!
I think (from what is said earlier) that Jess Davies made a 32, Grace o'c made a 64, and the others went out in the 128/poules. Is the mens tomorrow?

Managed to alter this web address to http://www.slovak-fencing.sk/Source/aktuality/matinengo/ep%C3%A9e%20masculin.pdf but it turns out we have no ME team :D.
And my 2 contacts on the sabre team have no credit, so they can't reply :(. Any news gratefully received.

Wow - the women's epee looks incredibly tough!! Well done to all the girls who all picked up plenty of victories in the poules. It's a tough day when you only drop one fight but are ranked 31st. Eeep!

I don't know if anyone has put these in fully already but here they are just in case:

Poules:

Amy Radford 3/6
Jade Clark 2/6
Hannah Lawrence 3/6
Jenny Mcgeever 3/6
Caitlin Chang 3/6
Corinna Lawrence 4/6
Liz Highton 3/5
Elisa Albini 4/5

Rankings after the poules:

Elisa Albini 31st
Corinna Lawrence 46th
Liz Highton 57th
Caitlin Chang 63rd
Amy Radford 65th
Hannah Lawrence 68th
Jenny McGeever 72nd
Jade Clark 90th

DEs:

L128 Radford out 15-11 to Beatrice Brockmann (64th)
L128 Mcgeever out 15-10 to Lucrezia Elvo (56th)
L128 Highton out 13-12 to Claire-Lise Herren (72nd)
L128 Lawrence.H out 15-12 to Ileana Catalina (60th)
L128 Lawrence.C out 15-13 to Iris Schechtman (82nd)

L64 Clark out 15-12 to Bettina Hochreitter (27th)

L32 Albini out 14-13 to ...Caitlin Chang!

L8 Chang out 15-7 to Caterina Ramella

Final rankings:

8th - Chang
28th - Albini
62nd - Clark
73rd - C.Lawrence
76th - E.Highton
78th - Radford
81st - H.Lawrence
84th - McGeever

A tough competition and all performed well in the poules. Great start. Congrats to Caitlin, Elisa and Jade for making the points and comiserations to the other girls who I'm sure will get another chance soon.

BTW - The next 1993 birthday after Caitlin finished 71st!

Heard from Natasha about an hour ago after losing her first DE to an Italian. This is what she remembers:

Grace and Nikki eliminated

Carolyn lost DE, rest of girls still to fence.

Boys:

All boys made a DE

Jamie and Ed lost and Rhys through.

Can't tell you any more or how accurate the information is!

I assumed 64, since confirmed in text that he thinks he's 32-ish, presumably from post-pool seedings.

Entry of 130-ish, we are also helpfully informed with exacting accuracy again.

So sounds like an excellent poule round from Nat followed by VERY narrowly missing the L32?

Good start to the season... :)

Latest from foil at Bratislava.

Natasha tells me Lisa and Hussayn both made L32.

Phillippa, Catriona and I think Liz made L64

She thinks Eli went out in 128 along with herself and Carolyn.

Tubs, does this mean her competition schedule becomes less hectic?I'd like to think so, however I have not spoken to the WC yet nor spoken with Mudge's school. Her coach has already put a flag in the sand about staying match sharp at international level. School may want her to do less as it is her GCSE year. Mudge herself cannot believe the discussion about burnout (she only spars once during the week and has missed the last 3 week's club nights with the hammies and will again this week) as from her POV comps at weekends is where she gets to fence.

My finger in the air guess/hope is that she may have got enough points to make her eligible for selection for both cadet and junior teams for Belfast but I'm not up on international nif so await Mr Francis' analysis. If that is the case we will be in the fortunate position of having to decide what to do if she does get selected for the higher age group.

Hold on. She must be at least a 92 Birth with a bad birthday, or this is just unfair  ! If she is a 93 birth i think she deserves even more congratulations!

She did win the Juniors...If only it were so. She has never even come close in the cadets. This year went out in L8 to Toni and last year got caned by Amy in the L16 and the year before that also a L16. So WE is quite tough, which is very good for the future.
