Women's cadet epee is amazingly tough at the moment with world top 5 Juniors going out before the medals and some teams not selecting world top 70 Juniors to compete.

Last years silver medalist is this years champion

Good luck to GB fencers tomorrow

A couple of sabres failed weapons control on overall length because (and I quote) Barry's nuts are too big!

Verity out in L16 to Ciarglia Italy the 4th seed - 15-11.

Final placing 15th.

Well done.

With noone else getting past the L64 in any weapon, this is the highlight of the event for GBR to date.

Come on teams, cause a few upsets in the next day or two.

;-)
This happened with Guernsey's sabres at the commonwealth juniors. 4 or so sabres failed because of the size of the Leon Paul nut

Duncan Rowlands

A couple of sabres failed weapons control on overall length because (and I quote) Barry's nuts are too big!

This is only an issue if you mix and match Barry's nuts with PBT sabre blades. LP blades are 0.5cm shorter than PBT blades, and so a full "Barry's package" fits fine.

Congratulations Verity! A very good result. :)

I don't want to sound too insulting, but all in all i think it's been a pretty poor week in the individuals. Let's get something in the teams. :(

A statement of fact should not be interpreted as an insult.
Verity is the only British fencer to have won a DE fight, and she hasn't been selected for the Worlds. With any luck, those that did not do so well can fix whatever was wrong in time for Belfast.

Surely having a shorter blade is a disadvantage, or is there some strange science in Sabre which means a shorter blade is beneficial.

TomA
-5th March 2009, 22:11
Firstly, well done Verity :)

With any luck, those that did not do so well can fix whatever was wrong in time for Belfast. In some ways, if it had to happen then it's better that it happened now, rather than at the worlds. Look at Jonny May last year - he didn't do so well at the Europeans, but kicked serious ass at the worlds.

It looks as though there were some good poule results, which suggests something didn't go quite right between the first round and the DEs.

Just as a final point, for most of the team, this was their first major international championship - as far as I know, only three had been to one previously.

riposteinprime

Some would say europeans is a harder competition than worlds, as it is the good world teams minus all the rubbish.

When using the edge blade balance and control are more important than 0.5cm extra length. It's not how big it is, it's what you can do with it that counts.:)

GB MS Team beats Poland 45:42. Interesting, Substitute Fabio Artesi comes in for the second last fight and fences a 10:3, not bad and nice substitution by the coach.

L8 against Germany now.

Ronald Velden
-6th March 2009, 09:10
Well done the Mens Sabre Team. Yesterday I thought that Poland were beatable.

Based on results of Team event at Camden International the margin between
Britain and Germany who are top seeds including two medallists and one last
8 from individual event is not as great as might be imagined.

The margin in Camden was just one hit per fencer. If the Germans are not
on top form they are beatable.

A very strong Israelie team opened a major can of :womping: and served it up to the girls winning 45-16.

The Israel team individually finished 13, 19, 21 and 23. The girl that placed 21 is a 95 birth year and she was the sub.

Last year it was Israel that beat GB in the teams as well though not so convincingly.

Ronald Velden
-6th March 2009, 13:37
The boys sabre team fenced exceptionally well in their last two matches losing to a very strong Russian Team 45-36 [it was just two hits difference
until last round]. I understand that Curtis Miller fenced particularly well in
this match.

In the final match against Belorussia the team of Curtis,Soji and Fabio were
winning comfortably midway but unfortunately Curtis had one bad match
losing 13 hits before the team recovered and were leading going into final
match before losing 45-44 to finish 8th.

The two younger fencers Soji and Fabio fenced particularly well and were not
outclassed by anyone despite facing older and physically bigger fencers.

There was no glove eating...

Thank you to those who did send the forms back, useful feedback for us.

However I only had 10 responses from 31 fencers & coaches. The list is on the usual link from www.fencingcoach.net (http://www.fencingcoach.net) & at http://sabrerankings.250x.com/bourges09.htm

What exactly do I have to do to get fencers & coaches to do this? If you are one of the fencers or coaches please do this now.

If you know them please apply some forceful encouragement.

Perhaps we need to write this into the code of conduct or perhaps make any funding (this trip cost British Fencing thousands) conditional on returning paperwork on time.

The carrot not the stick.
