Just to give an idea of the unequal nature of the events

Women's Foil 9 of the world top 200 are eligible to enter. Natalia Shepherd would be seeded 2nd into the event from a World Ranking of 55 and there are 2 qualifying places

Men's Epee 19 of the World top 200 are eligible to enter. Jon Willis would be seeded 15th into the event from a World Ranking of 100 and there are 4 qualifying places.

These are very quick calculations and may not be completely accurate.

Hi, sorry for my ignorance but could someone fill me in on why only 9 of the top 200 are elligible? Is it purely because there are very few countries with top class women's foilists and they have all qualified at least one already?

I copied and pasted the top 200 from the FIE website then deleted all of the fencers from outside Europe, all of the fencers from the countries qualified via the team route and all the fencers from the countries of those qualified via rankings. I then left in just the top ranked fencer from each other country.

That left just 9 fencers. If I remember correctly, that is the route by which Martina Qualified for Beijing. It was a similar strength of event.

For WS Louise B-W is highest ranked at 49th. 9 of the top 200 would be eligible for the zonal with Louise seeded 4th (and 4 qualifying spots).

I calculated 18 and making Jon seeded 14th - but I could be wrong too :)

2 places for weapons with a team event and 4 places for a weapon with no team event.

The two examples in the initial post sound quite similar to me:

In ME twice the places available with twice the number of fencers.

All the zonals are awkward and unpredictable events, with the pools being extremely important, and at least one DE win against a very good world cup fencer required.

when are selections for the zonals/London taking place? Apologies if the answer to this is in a very obvious place
