Kenber included. Thank god (and more likely, medical science), considering last I heard of him he was on crutches. Let's hope it was really nothing, and also that Halsted has mended.

Both glad and surprised to see the inclusion if Mary Cohen! Congrats to her :)

She got a Last 16 in Rio, so qualified by reaching the qualifying standard.

Think there would have been uproar if she had not been selected..

Good luck to all those who are competing for GBR at the event.

To be honest I didn't realise she'd met the standard but good on her going :)

Doesn't this mean that Phil Marsh cannot have been given a host nation place? Or is the statement ambiguous enough to update the team to include him once the host nation places are announced?

"31. Any fencer who has been selected either by direct qualification or via a host nation place
to represent GBR at the 2012 Olympic Games will be automatically selected for the 2012
European Championships. Should there be more athletes qualified than places available
priority will be given to those athletes selected to represent GBR at the Olympic Games."

Wouldn't the Europeans be in the middle of his A levels anyway?

Wouldn't the Europeans be in the middle of his A levels anyway?

Fair point, I guess that might be a possibility too, that he was offered a place having got an Olympic Host nation place but declined for exams. I guess we'll find out on the 24th!

An absolute carve up in the poules, some very interesting early match ups. Ansett versus Woog, Kovalev and Zalomor and if Pastore beats Von Holsbekke think he could pull an upset on Limbach. I hope Rousset can beat Lapkes but that is going to be tough!!

To tell you the truth I had very low expectations regarding the live video coverage because the competition would be held in Italy. If anyone has ever followed live video feeds on federscherma would know the quality is really poor.

What I am most disappointed with is ze Germans because I was relying on their live text coverage of the event on Fencingworldwide and was really happy when I first discovered it would be them because in my experience of using the service it has always been top notch. Today however, itís the worst itís ever been.

Great Result for Richard, and for Laurence and James as well - great confidence booster and hope they can find the same form for the team event. Haven't really watched competition at this level before - surprised to see Richard lose from 10-4 up - is that sort of turnaround common?

Wierd for Richard to be saying '"I wanted to have a complete burn-out before the Olympics and wanted to push myself to the absolute limit, I did just that. I'll settle for bronze now and we'll work on fitness when we get back." '

Surely fitness should have been what was worked on at the start of the season, not just a few weeks before the Olympics??

With the new professional 'ethos' surely someone needs a real kicking if these 'full-time' fencers are having fitness issues at this stage of the season?

Oddly enough Cesh, I was thinking exactly the same thing, but wasn't going to post for fear of incurring Barry's wrath at being negative.

I'm inclined to believe that the quote is a single line from what might have been a longer interview.

I do agree that at this stage of the season, going into the Euro's and just a few weeks from the Olympics, any fencer should be working at peak level and fitness (other than injury recovery) should not be on the agenda.

With that said. I will sit back, follow the results (and the crappy amount of live streaming available) and cheer for every British fencer and team out there.

I was about to post something similar. I would have thought Gold would have put down a better marker, though possibly pile the pressure up higher.

I would have thought fitness maintenance was the order of the day now then tapering down to avoid burn out and injury before the big event.

In response to CESH, JohnL and FA, I completely agree that it does seem strange to be going for a burn out at the Euros, but considering what I saw of how he was fencing (which was only the youtube stream) combined with his earlier DE results, I'd say Ziemek and RK may be onto something. The only worry I had (in the bout, at least), aside from the fitness thing, which everyone has pointed out, was the timing of his extension causing the large amount pf white lights.

The burn out thing I would suggest was a bit of a smokescreen for him slightly changing his timing and being more attacking than I've seen him at that stage of competitions, plus the weather conditions and delays knackering him out earlier than he would have liked, although I am most probably wrong (as usual) on this.

Otherwise, the Italians are obviously working on something for the OG, but if we can get a head of steam going, I think we can still bring home a couple of shineys :)

I was going to say that it's pretty disappointing for Willis to get knocked out 12-7 by the world number 136, but the fact that Backer took out the world number 24 in the previous round does illustrate how close Epee is at this level.

Hope JW enjoyed his last international...it's been great following him.

Jon Willis bows out of his last International event, succumbing on time to former Junior World Champion Fredrick Baker from Norway, at the European Championships in Legnano Italy. While the result today did not see him into the pre medal zone, there must be a few smiles going round as he finished a round ahead of both the reigning Olympic Champion Matteo Tagliariol, and the current world number 1 Bas Verwijlen.

Willis who has dominated British Epee for over a decade, and set the International scene alight by becoming the first British Epeeist for two decades to win a Senior World Cup, not once but twice, will be a loss both on and off piste at the very top of our sport.

I take your point but just saying we don't necessarily have to lose Jon, or for that matter anyone, to international fencing. However last year at the Eurpoeans 40 -49 there were over 225 male epeeists- as I said no picinic. The standard is getting higher every year with more ex - olympic athletes entering! Dam it :(

I don't want to appear negative but I'm afraid that this comment is somewhat insulting! It is comparing apples to oranges. It is worth bearing in mind that one of the L32's was cut after the poules and the other two were beaten comprehensively (according to the scores) in their first round of DE's! Jon at least won a DE against someone who was clearly on form today.

He says:

I wanted to do a brief analysis of the results from this Euros and of past GBR performances so made a doc (split it into 2 word docs as apparently we can't upload excel sheets).

The poule results from the mens events shows that the top end of both Mens Foil and Mens Sabre have been more consistent with the top 10 fencers entered winning 75% of their first round matches compared to Men's Epee where the average was much lower at 63%. The winner for both foil and sabre came from a fencer in the top 8 whereas the winner of the epee was well down in the rankings.

And I am sure he'll post up some more info' once he sees this.

Hard to know just from bout scores whether there was any tactical variations being tried but they were behind the scoring rate from the first bout and there were two 1-0 scores in there for good measure. WST Euro2012 9-10: GB def BLR 45-35 to take 9th place

Anyone know the breakdown?

As most will agree, I tend to be critical of various elements of British fencing, and will continue to be so.

However, I have confined my comments on this thread to complete support for ALL athletes representing GB at the European championships. I suggest others do the same.

I have no doubt the GB team, together with their coaches (and unfortunately a few "administrators") will go over all the results in detail. With the internet making all information available, I have no doubt that more than a few armchair warriors will present the stats with a view to justifying their own agenda. (I have no problem with this, hell, it's an open forum.)

I would hope though, that while the championships are on, we could limit ourselves to the complete support of OUR team. They are out there putting THEIR butts on the line and deserve our support, rather than the snarky sarcasm and bout by bout analysis of their performance while they are still fencing.

Given the past few posts, I hope the fencers are being isolated from this forum until after the competition ends.

Get behind the fencers and support them.

Absolutely right! I thought I was simply answering a question above:( - I hadn't noticed the "snarky sarcasm"

Anyhow, bout analysis from teams is no use without knowing what instructions they are following in individual bouts.

Well done WS team!

GBR MF just lost 45-40 against Poland in the 5th/6th playoff.

Good 9-5 comeback from Halsted in the penultimate bout, but not quite enough for the win.

If I have offended anyone I am truly sorry there was no saracsm intended just a geniune interest in women's fencing and no-one else appeared to be following women's sabre. Sorry again.

The sarcasm comment wasn't directed at you (although the posting of individual stats was) it was more at TB and Cesh. (and anyone else who'd like to join in while the competition is still going on.)

Just wanted to make a correction to the write up on the British Fencing website about the Men's Epee event write up. It says,

"Willis finished the first round V3D2 and made the cut for the incomplete round of 64. It was a tight fight against Salm (EST) during which Willis came from behind to win 15-14."

For accuracy's sake, after the poules there was an incomplete round of 128 which fed into a complete round of 64. British Fencing seem to have lost a round of DE

Silly question, but can reserves for the teams at the OGs be included in the starting line-up of the first (or any) match? I had assumed obviously yes, but this was questioned by someone at my club yesterday.

J4G started a new thread on this based on last nights conversation.

Hearby including Cheremisinov in the "Heroic, last-ditch comeback" club with Joppich and Le Pechoux. :not_worth
Well played by Wessels though. Epic match.

Mine goes to Pechoux

When you score 21 hits (out of a team total of 34) against the Italians, you deserve respect!!!!!!

Obviously I hope the GB MFT win gold in London ('hope', I emphasise), but if there was any other team I would rather see win it, it would be France. Not that I don't enjoy watching the Italians or the Germans in action, but the French guys just have something about them that's hard to word. That, and Le Pechoux's never say die-approach. He just keeps fighting...

I want to point out that I support the fencers wholeheartedly, however think that the 'Medal Zone' is just a cheap gimmick which has been invented to give the 'system' a back door if things do not go particularily well in London and Last 8s become 'Medal Zone' performances, especially in events with 8 or 9 teams competing.

Personally I feel BF should be honest with the past performances/potential of the fencers/teams, and i think if a better selection scheme was in place we would have had more chances (though many of them slim) than we have ended up with.. I do however hope to be proven wrong and that British Fencers get multiple medals in London..

But get rid of the "Medal Zone" claptrap....

Good luck to the Women's foilists today and I hope that you can make that breakthrough to the Semi-Finals..

JohnL, I agree that we should be supporting our team wholeheartedly and I do having been a part of it for the past few years.

I posted one document which showed the percentage wins of the top 10 entered in each mens weapon and one that simply showed GBR results from 2007. I have not commented on the figures, only posting them as I though others might find it interesting. There is no agenda in this at all.

If you have ever followed any of the news British fencing write up regarding International events you will have noticed they always get things wrong. So not surprised theyíve missed that bit of information out.
