View Full Version : Proposed Fencing Forum Competition

uk_45
-29th April 2004, 21:39
You may or may not be aware that a few months ago I raised the idea of having a competition for forum memebers. I have now inlisted the help of some people that know what they are doing and so the idea has taken off.

If any one intrested could please fill out this poll (http://www.greendayonline.com/comp) it would help.

For more information please see this (http://fencingforum.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1847) thread.

Any further enquiries please feel free to e-mail : comp@greendayonline.com

Thanks,

Tom

Why?

uk_45

Venues are fun sorry i've been at a comp all day (glasses broke in Poule how fun)

gbm
-23rd May 2004, 21:46
Never broken a pair of my glasses yet. But they do make putting on a mask damn difficult. Which is one of the reasons I never take my mask off during a fight except during breaks or if my hair is in the way (I need to get it cut badly). The other reason is that I'm not *that* cruel...

uk_45
-23rd May 2004, 21:47
Doubt its longer than mine! No this was stuart marshall's guard to my mask

gbm
-23rd May 2004, 22:05
Yes but mine is long at the front instead of the back. Think sheepdog.

Ouch! The joys of sabre...

uk_45
-23rd May 2004, 22:06
mines all round, think 'cousin it'

gbm
-23rd May 2004, 22:26
One of those then...

Moose
-23rd May 2004, 22:49
Hehehe cousin itt is fairly apt.

Well, why not? Organising a competition for members of this forum is a little bit different, especially if it is international, and could be a useful hook to hang off in terms of getting press interest, from Sword / media local to where the competition is held if nothing else. I'm assuming that this would be the first time it's been done, so again it's different. Admittedly, it would primarily be good for Leon Paul, but still, fencing is fencing...

uk_45
-24th May 2004, 17:04
It is the forst time it's been done yes

To be honest guys. If it's not past your shoulders then your hair is not long. At the moment my hair is the longest in my company. Not that I am bragging mind. Hair this long can be a complete pain.

One of the reasons I wear contacts to fence in...ok so I could use standard ones, but its more fun not to

If it's not past your shoulders then your hair is not long.

My hair's a good 3-4 inches past my shoulders!

but then am AM female and all

uk_45
-29th May 2004, 22:08
Yeah id say 3 or 4 for mine

Nick
-31st May 2004, 01:24
But at least once it's past your shoulders you can tie it back, mine's at the point where it's too long to leave alone and too short to tie back or even use a headband for..(only a few more months and then I shall once more know who I'm fencing ha ha ha...):rambo:

Athos
-31st May 2004, 20:08
It's worse if your hair's layered- I tie mine back and then have loads of hair pins (it has been around 20 before) to try and keep the shorter bits back. It doesn't work though - there's always one bit of hair that finds it way to the front of my face the moment I've got my mask on!

Sorry...Just picked up on this thread, I've not been a member (or fencing for that matter) for long.

Is this comp happening and what is the difference between an open and a comp with categories?

I've got an idea about an open competition but if it's in categories, will there be one for novices like me or would I be pitted against experts?

uk_45
-28th June 2004, 20:00
Ok well i hope PM1 is still in contact stages with the venue. And catergories has U16 U18 U20 20+ and vetrain compitions open is every one vs every one

pincushion
-28th June 2004, 20:26
I've not got a cat in hell's chance of a place then! LOL

hayleyjade
-29th June 2004, 09:48
hmmmm question, exactly how many ppl are going to be in the u16 cat???

i know i would be, but cant think of anyone apart from uk that would be in the same cat, and we are different weapons! i want to get tramped, and have some competition, teehee!!!!!!

Is it just the venue we are having problems with???

Or just the whole organising thing?

If it does go ahead will we be spearated into different weapons? Lol could be quite fun if we're not

Good luck with the venue PM1!!! Where have you been looking to get? A school, leisure centre? What? And what kinda size are we looking for? Coz Mum might have some ideas.

MiniMelia.

PM1
-11th April 2005, 23:57

MiniMelia
-12th April 2005, 14:44
She's quite busy this week with OFSTED but i'll mention it to her and see if she can do anything.

That be ok? She might not have an answer, but we have just had the West Mids Champs at my school for the first time and it worked out well, so maybe if it's bg enough we could look into that?

Anyway i'll ask mum sometime in the next two weeks (very busy atm tho :( )

MiniMelia.

Children...I like them so much that I've paid to export one of mine to the Antipodes for 5 months.....I'm running a comp next w/e myself, MM - I KNOW how to DO it, it's getting the time to set it up at a venue as yet undisclosed/undecided.....but a Midland venue could be an excellent venue - we have talked of Coventry/Warwick before now. Ned cheapo accomodation or room for tents.

as for Ofsted, give me CScy any day....not. We are being inspected in November. Blargh.

any more ideas??

The Cambridge Open Air tournament used tennis courts last year. Until it was forced inside by rain, anyway. That's one possibility. Or you could just try and get some raised metallic pistes to set up on the lawn.

Now - you know how sometimes, thoughts come into your head when you least expect?? Well.....washing down the drawers in my kitchen today (I know, I WILL get a life one day...), the thought came into my head as follows....why not see if people would go to Upper Heyford..... . I mean, the new epee comp will be there in June, and we are having several TA training sessions there, and ref exams and coaching. It's just off the M40, and there is somewhere to kip (usually) and a sprung floor.....and it;s not too expensive (I think)

Anyone game???:)

Aidyboy
-22nd May 2005, 12:59
does depend when. I'd be up for it if it's not too close to the new men's épée. Does anybody else think my plans for that are crazy btw? Im driving up at 4:30 in the morning to get there in time for check-in. Well I say 'I'm' driving. I suppose really, my parents will be driving me. . .

toblerone
-22nd May 2005, 13:08
Not quite as crazy as Rubber Ducky for the Edinburgh Coupe du Nord: drive from Falmouth to Bristol in the middle of the night, fly to Edinburgh, fence, fly back on the same day, drive home again. Don't know anybody who's beaten that...

And about the member comp: I'd rather have it some time in August/ September cos I'll acutally be in England

pinkelephant
-22nd May 2005, 19:26
In my youth:
Train from Bristol to Edinburgh for English v Scottish Universities match, overnight train from Edinburgh to London, first tube across London to Waterloo, train to Portsmouth, fence all weekend in Portsmouth Open (whatever happened to that - was at HMS Temerare) then train back to Bristol on Sunday night.

Of course, planes worked by rubber band & propellor back then, so not an option.
