The main changes to the Senior Selection Policy can be summarised as follows:

Reduction in discretionary – in Senior World Cups/Grand Prix from top 1/2 in Senior rankings guaranteed to top 10 in Senior rankings (out of 12)
Reduction in qualifying standards

European Championships

Previously approx. 1xL16 + 1xL32 or 1 x L 8,
New: 2xL64 ,

World Championships

Previously approx. 2xL16 + 1xL32 or 1xL4
New: 1xL32
New description of discretionary principles for individual and team (previously none listed)

The overall intention is to reduce discretion, encourage more people to compete and allow for the inevitable reduction in standard as our best athletes will be unlikely to continue full time training. The intention is then to slowly increase standards every year, supported by a stronger Sport England funded Talent system and a Senior programme supported by a volunteer structure.

This seems like a huge sea-change for the good.

This will certainly give encouragement to fencers (outside MF) who should now see Euro and World qualification a realistic possibility, whereas the previous criteria made it a little out of their grasp.

The benefit in experience any fencer will get from attending Euro's or Worlds should then be a springboard going forward from their to even higher targets..

YAY!
Last two places on discretion:
The remaining two quota places will be filled by fencers, subject to fitness and eligibility, selected by the Weapon Selection Panel, taking into account:
-Injury/illness (eg an athlete returning from injury)
-Commitment to training
-Team Strategy –eg Skills to perform a specific role within the team event
-Performance Trajectory and Talent Programme Activity (Junior/U23 progress)
-Demonstrable commitment to BF values
Tentative YAY for this part, have to see how it pans out, but this is the right principle exactly. Maybe give it to #1/2 junior if no-one applies for a place?

YAY! This is a massive improvement - was far too hard to qualify for Euros (as demonstrated by 1 team and 1 individual actually meeting the criteria this time), but has a big impact on a season due to the relatively easier points means a boost in rankings to get better seedings for the rest of the year.

World Championships

Previously approx. 2xL16 + 1xL32 or 1xL4
New: 1xL32

YAY! This is still hard but not impossible and is a great reward for attaining that standard.

AND there's a new appeals process (previously removed) for non-selection.

All we need now is to switch from 4/2 int/dom back to 3/3 and we're seriously on the right track again.
Now the domestic points are worth fighting for again because top10 is guaranteed selection, no matter where you live or who your coach is, or whether you're funded.

Now, I say this as a veteran now, but I really hope this is as well-received by those fencers who want to take internationals seriously. Has to be good news, surely?

edit: top 12 for teams for Euros as well. Now this is going to be a different problem as unfunded teams are really expensive, but the criteria have changed to reflect this, which is a good thing.
