The top 16 after the poules go straight through to the L64 along with the top 16 seeds at the start of the comp. Harry moved up from =100th to 85th for the L256 so his opponent would be the 172nd ranked fencer - but the cut was at 150, so he got a bye.

Mens Epee and Foil; Womens Foil and Sabre are particularly tough to call this year. All the weapons are quite difficult to judge but I think these are the worst to predict.

We tried in our last episode... but jeezo it was tough.

Unfortunately the way they have done the Youtube streams means that only the last 4 hours are retained from a nearly 9 hour stream, so I can't link to any of the GBR fights.
If we're lucky, they might put them up later, otherwise it would be good to try to capture the live streams somehow, as they all went pretty close with their opponents today, 3 of which were in the top 16 in the world.

In the WF Final there was a brilliant close quarters interchange for a hit near the end of the fight, the Russian was well aware of the Italians favoured counter attacks and seemed to have neutralised them and was walking away with the Gold.
Daughter and I were amazed when somehow the score was equalised again and now the fight was going down to a final hit decider. The Italian obviously was sneaking in the odd hit in between all the tactical interruptions in play she caused (leg problems, knee problems, sock problems, hand problems, weapon problems, I think that was the lot).

Meinhardt was looking good

Without being rude to their L32 opponents, neither of them were taken out of second gear tactically.

Marcus fenced well against Meinhardt, but seemed to lose his shape going forwards as Meinhardt opened up the distance towards the end when he pulled away by a couple of hits.

I don't think Richard will do that.

James fence the most balance I have seen him for a while. Key to me was creeping too close with his arm wide and picked off by 4 or 5 fast attacks to chest. Cheremisinov also kept his hand back, but not so wide. Same against MCW. A lot of line work there.

Yep that's exactly the same thing

It is when you consider the teams were not at the same competitive level as those fencing FIE events.

Coming back from being down 40-20 to win is impressive at ANY level.

Korea were simply amazing in the MsT final.

Did you see that about the same thing happened in a local team sabre match in Southern California years ago....a legend for the older sabeurs around there apparently.

Hey Gav

As you know, I'm a foilist through and through, regarding Epee for Neanderthal's only.

However, having watched your favorite man (Heinzer) in the MET semi against Hungary, I might convert. As Epeeist's go, the guy is definitely out to lunch!!!

Loved it!

I've started uploading world champs photos.

Probably easiest to start with my instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/antifencer/

Ran Italy closer than I expected, and Kamal proved that he poses significant problems to top fencers. Let's hope he keeps working and that continues when he is better known rather than the new kid on the block.

Shame that James didn't have the greatest of matches. At a 35:37 deficit, I though we were in with a shot. So to go down 37:45 was a little disappointing in the end.

Of course the results update service is down right now. Ophardt are really poor! To quote a person I will not name, but does know what they are talking about "they are stuck in the 1960s".

MFT this morning
GBR seeded 13th beat Sweden 45-27 in the L32,
vs Italy in the L16 lose 37-45
vs Ukraine for 9-16

No RK remember, so this is Davis, Mepstead, Minott
Just shows how much difference the ranking makes! GBR are 13th on 135 points, having entered only 4 team comps this season.
http://fie.org/fencers/team/6886/points/S/F/M/E/2017

Germany are 9th on 149 points from 6 comps entered and draw Chile in the L16.
http://fie.org/fencers/team/6957/points/S/F/M/E/2017

Shows that you HAVE to enter enough team events throughout the year to build enough ranking to give yourself any chance in the major championships. The weaker zonal championships outside Europe make a huge difference in terms of "easy" points, Brazil are 8th with only one individual in the top 50!

Not even a consolation bout for Peggs all day as reserve, first 3 did every match. Bet he's glad he flew all that way..

Hoping its just a system error as that would be pretty cruel, especially against a team like Egypt for 13/14 placing...

Glad to see we achieved our team seeding, but the draw was not too kind to us.

Italy in the 16 was a mountain to climb.

This reminds me of a local amateur sabre match which took place in Southern California one time.

Legendary amongst older fencers.

That's like comparing 2 ferrari's racing with 2 20 year old beat up fiat uno's.

There is no comparison.

Guys can we just keep this to World Championships.

Don't know about the rest of you but my hero is probably Erwann LePechoux after he took the french mens foil team to a bronze (let's face it, HE did all the work there).

Although full contact epee comes a close second.

Iran had a good run against Hungary in the L8...only losing by 3.

Then they beat France in the 5-8 tableau match by 2, and beat Romania by 2 in the 5-6, finishing in 5th overall.

Where are they training?
