Hi Guys,
stabber here from Sheffield Uni fencing club. Last year some of our beginners were kindly invited to York Uni for the day where we had a mini competition. It was a really good day and I think everyone enjoyed it. This year we would like to return the invite and open it up to other unis in our league as well.
I can arrange a room booking 1-4.30pm on a saturday if people would like to bring some beginners (3-6 people per uni sounds good). As a club we get charged a fortune for the venue (comfortably holds 2 pistes) and therefore would be grateful if clubs could donate 10 if they come, but as we know all clubs are in a tricky positions this has to be voluntary.

Anyway I hope that this could happen just after easter (ie after BUSA ) and that clubs would be willing to send one advanced fencer too that could help preside. Not too bothered about what counts as a novice (anyone attending beginners sessions I guess)

Please let me know if this is possible for you

Thanks. :fight:

We might have some interested novices. I've let people at my club know about your proposal.

On a slightly unrelated note, I visited Sheffield Uni the other day, and rather liked it. What's the fencing like there stabber?

Ta.

(wasn't so keen on the course structure at York)

fencing here is great fun (i know that sounds tacky, so let me explain.....)

the club has a squad of about 15-20 fencers, and then an additional 20-30 beginners, which are taught separately.

we have recently acquired a brilliant coach (Colin Walls, Manchester area), who has helped our advanced fencers greatly (though he is a sabre specialist, his other lessons are great).

outside of the uni, there are some experienced foil coaches (ie adam blight) who have trained some of the GB cadets&juniors that hail from the sheffield area.

the mens and womens teams have done alrite this year at the BUSA competitions, we both got to the Knock Out rounds of the championships and trophy competitions.

next year, our womens teams will include Ellie Collier and Helen Stenner - ver well ranked fencers, who should help improve the teams performance next year.

the socials are not to be missed - we have had one of the best years this season!

let me know if u have any other questions, or even if you happen to be passing thru sheffield - you might be able to join in one of our training sessions

I was there last week! Popped into the Sports office at the Student Union and had a chat with the guy there. Off to Edinburgh next week. (Then just Sussex to go). At the moment Sheffield is a strong contender.

Looks like York won't be able to play, sorry. We have various competitions at weekends at the start of next term and will have issues getting the novices to Sheffield.
