Fingers crossed, especially about Tunis - the last couple of years that they scheduled to run a WF world cup there, it was cancelled...

Hopefully things should be different now that there are fines involved if an A-grade is cancelled.

Still, it goes without saying, everybody should make sure that they have suitable travel insurance.

Good luck everyone.

Don't worry Banzai, I might even have a comprehensive annual multi-trip insurance already ;)

Does that mean we all have to buy you drinks Keith? Have NEVER seen an FIE observer up-and-about at 9am on Sunday morning, bright-eyed and bushy tailed and paying close attention to the L64s

Dear Tigger,

Well life is full of new experiences and you will see me as I have to allocate all the referees for every match!! I also have to decide all appeals!!

Heigh ho,

Keith

Deasr All,

Can I remind you that for GP events you must have the same national strip on both legs and all fencers must have the same and in particular for the team event or you cannot fence!!

Keith

Dear Tigger,

But under new FIE rules the ref delegate decides everything to do with the actual fencing!!

I have used Columbus insurance in the past and they were good but they don't offer personal liability cover now. I think they used to. Got some through Perkins Slade this time as they do offer it, may be paying more though.:(

What i have heard is a bit vague. First i heard that just neil had got through to tomorrow but now I belive Jon, Al and Chris are also through to tomorrow. Apparently its not a big competition and its an incomplete 64 but the fencers that are there are tough ones.

-22nd January 2006, 00:29
I heard the same from Marcos, O*N is through as well. He says 10 of the top 20 in the world are there, so quite a high standard.
Apparently their (O*N/Marcos's) baggage didn't turn up until after the poules, all sorts of kit borrowing going on, not ideal preparation.

Good luck to them for tomorrow, should be good experience.

hello from ıstanbul O'N and ı have found some desperately poor ınternet cafe

O'N qualıfıed out of the poules on hıs fırst ever A grade:) :)

Jon. Hutch. Al (another A grade vırgın) and Bucko also all got through the poules...hutch wıth a very good 3 wıns

very tough fıeld though and we all fell at L64

I'm afraid they were disappointing performances from myself, Mo Mansoori and Chris Buxton.

Neil Hutch hit par, with 3 up, 2 down in the pools, before going down 15-11 to Shkalikov. Al Jupp fenced excellently in his first A grade. 2 wins in the pool and worked the Romanian number 4 Siriteanu very hard before going down 15-9. Simon had a bit of a tough pool and found it heavy going in his first A grade, but I'm sure learnt a lot and will be back for more!

Just as a point of interest, even if we had all won our L64 fights, we would still have had to win our L32 fights before being awarded domestic points...

Hopefully this has sharpened us all up a bit for Tunis this coming weekend:

Myself, Chris, Neil, Mo, Al, Julian Nelis all going.

Cheers to all for your positive support

Jon

Interestingly only five Turks took part in their home world cup...

And there were only four pistes, so despite the small entry there was still two waves of pools!

And aao's girlfriend is hot!

Was a tad on the harsh side - would have given my right arm for a Turkish fencer in my pool. Horrible feeling looking around for the bunny in the pool and then realising it was me!!

Was still a cracking weekend, and at least one of my masks made it through to the L32 (borrowed by one of the Americans!).

Have a great time in Tunis and remember Jon.........

Glad to be of assistance!

Strangely the bus ride to the car park at Heathrow just didn't have the same adrenalin rush as those in Turkey. For start, all four wheels stayed on the tarmac!

Mental note: Never accept a fly-drive holiday to Istanbul.

:o: why thank you :)

the reason for the low turnout of turks is a bit down to the fact that probably our best 3 or 4 sabreurs all quit in disgust at the way the federation was operating last year, so you sort of got the guys who were left. A couple of them are quite good especially erdogan kzildag whos the kid who lost to James Williams 15-14 (on a very very very ropey decision) at the last olympic qualifier.

As for the 4 pistes thing, theres a bit of an argument going on in turkey about that, we have about 20 full mettalic pistes avaialbe so why they weren't used nobody knows, rest assured the europeans will be a far better organised event.

what did you think of istanbul?? did you go to taksim ;)

What an amazing experience! The pain, the adrenalin rush, the comradeship - and that was just eating the chillies! :hairfire2

Thanks to the team for such a brilliant adventure, and to Paul for putting up with us!
I have to go now it's "me time"!

BanzaiBoy
-25th January 2006, 08:27
Like the great Rubber Ducky says it was a terrific trip and despite the results I didn't stop enjoying myself!

Thanks to Paul and the rest of the team - our official ref seemed to be struggling with the flu all weekend.

Istanbul was a very interesting place, although we mostly managed to see it in the dark and as it was shutting. Fish sandwiches on the waterfront were extremely good.

And remember Rubber Ducky, too much "me time" will lead to dehydration!!

actually, what might be useful is if in advance of going to a foreign comp is if someone on here could put a few phrases in the local lingo (phonetically!)- you know, "hello", "3 kebabs please" etc

all I know in arabic is

hello - salam aleikum
thanks - shukran
no worries - mafi muscula (as in no worries, your bags will arrive in 10 mins)
if you're lucky - inshallah (literally if God wills - as in, your bags will arrive if the Gods smile on you)

don;t know if that would be any use to the boys going to Tunis (tho do they also speak french there?)

anyway - get stuck into 'em lads
