Another bright idea from the FIE...

The FIE has decided to try a new formula for the team events replacing the competition by weapon with a mixed weapon event. Both men and women's teams will be made of two foilists, two epeeist, and two sabreurs. And will use the 2008 cadet and juniors to test out the idea, with a view to use it at London 2012.

But it does mean BFA will have to take all weapons of all genders seriously/equally if they are to have a chance in team events.

So this is another way to reduce the number of fencers and medals at the Olympics. Only one team medal instead of 4 at present. Why is the FIE playing into the IOCs hands

2 teams, surely? "Both men's and women's teams..........."

I haven't seen the original but I interpreted it as being one male and one female foillist....etc

I stand to be correct if that is not the case.

We also now know the venue: Catania in Italy (from a shortlist of three, the two others being Bangkok and Cancun).

It will also be the last Cadet World Championships apparently.

This is really tough on 1992 cadets who are working hard with a goal of making the Worlds in 2009. If the 1991 cadets above them are a very strong year (as they are in WS) then 2009 would have been their only realistic chance of making the Worlds.

my reading of it is that it is going to be separate men's and women's teams, with the weapons mixed. i have not seen any explanation of how the format works so far.

also, it appears not to be originally an fie idea but suggested to them by (amongst others) the italians.

i dare say that the fie are not playing into the ioc's hands, rather, having asked for more medals and being repeatedly turned down, have looked for a solution that is more equitable across the weapons, which this surely is.

of course, as a format it strongly favours the traditionally strong nations, as they have talent across the weapons.

also, as far as i can see the reason that the bfa don't take other weapons as 'seriously' as others is that there are not sufficiently good fencers in those weapons to be taken seriously.

I think mixed weapon competitions are brilliant, I'm all for this. I would prefer teams of 9 on the relay system (like BUSA) but will be interested to see how they work it with teams of 6. I think it's basically more exciting to bring the weapons together;with one year the sabreurs getting bragging rights the next the epeeists saving the day. Not all change is bad (even by the FIE)
