Well done to the organisers of the 1st BSC Epee Comp of the next Season 2013/14. Great to see all the information up nice and early, (especially when I have 2 kids returning to the sport) also fantastic having the 2 sexes competing on the same day (it's a son and daughter returning to Epee).

But on the other hand SF you appear to be returning to old habits! U-12/17/20 Scottish Championships less than a month away and we're all still guessing where it will be held! It's no good putting items up on the Website with the sub-heading of "to be arranged". It's over 2 days I'll have to be there both days with 4 kids fencing, come on get it organised!

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to the forum. I used to do some sabre fencing in my younger days, my greatest success having been to get kicked out in the quarter-finals in the British University Championships. That was in some year of the later Triassic. Lately I have returned to the sport through my sons, who have both taken up foil.
Cheers,

Please find attached the information on the coach education course being run this summer at Millfield.

This is being predominantly organised by the south west regional fencing hub (but is open to all form all regions) in conjunction with Millfieldfencingcourses.com. (please visit the website for more info on the courses we run for coaches and fencers).

If you have any questions at all please feel free to PM me or email me trp@millfieldschool.com .

As I was developing as a coach (as of course i still am) I found this sort of residential course invaluable as it gave time to really practice skills as well as practice for assessments.

The headline cost covers your course fees and all accomodation and food etc. If you do not wish to use the accomodation or food options then please contact me to discuss.

hope to see you there.

I hesitated before I decided to post this. I was reading the US forum yesterday and they are in the midst of electing new people to their HQ. There's been a few discussions but a couple of things struck me;

Compared with previous campaigns it's been remarkably quiet.
There has been far less BS vomited onto that forum. Which is surprising given how strident some of the members are.

And this was an organisation that very recently was in a ruined state. It's governance was poor, it was bankrupt, it was sued by one of its coaches (and they didn't even contest the case) and eventually USOC stepped in and took over.

In short US fencing nearly ceased to be.

So over on fnet some of the respondents have asked that the candidates talk about what they think USFA has done well and what have they done poorly.

And there's been some interesting responses.

Here's one I will quote in full:

Quote:

While there are definitely more than three items to ponder for both the "right" and "wrong" categories, here are ones that come to mind:

Right:
1.	Grown an organization capable of producing elite fencers in all weapons, from the ground-up, who are competitive with the top ranks of world fencing. We now have a respected position and voice in world fencing.
2.	Cultivated a national fencing community providing broad opportunities to enjoy the sport both recreationally and competitively (for many countries, fencing is elite and inaccessible to anyone but professional and/or fully committed athletes).
3.	Transitioned to a more “in-the-moment” media organization, effectively leveraging social media at the very least for the benefits of our membership.

Wrong:
1.	There is a fundamental lack of communication and guidance from the organization to support clubs to help them start, grow, and operate their businesses.
2.	Our national presentation of fencing desperately needs to be overhauled, to improve the experience for fencers, spectators, coaches, officials, and [potential and actual] sponsors.
3.	We must significantly improve efforts to market, brand, and publicize fencing outside our own community, to leverage our history, successes, and demographics, and to grow the sport.

Overall, I have seen USA Fencing grow and evolve over the last decade in spite of several significant missteps. I see excited kids come through the doors of our club every day and I know that the club experience is where it all begins for many, if not most fencers. It is essential that USA Fencing truly strive to understand fencing in the club context so that we optimize our ability to continue outreach to USA communities. This is how we will ultimately develop future Olympic champions, but also create opportunities for families and individuals to enjoy fencing for life.

I am running for the Club Director position. My background is diverse, including more than a decade working for the FIE and with USA Fencing, and I have extensive connections in world and national fencing in addition to a corporate resume in technology communications/marketing, journalism, and entrepreneurial endeavors. My background encompasses owning and running fencing clubs (including currently), competing nationally and internationally, being section officer/chair and a USA Fencing board member, coaching, and being a fencing parent and coming from a historical European/Russian fencing family. I have been to every Summer Nationals since 2001 as well as every Olympic Games and 22 world championships in the same time frame. I understand not only how to fence, but how the fencing community and world work at a broad level--locally, domestically, and internationally. I believe fencing clubs are the essential elements where fencing is cultivated, and where we reach communities with our sport. They are our lifeblood and are vital to ensuring fencing achieves its full potential in such a diverse (geographically, culturally, etc. etc.) country as the USA.

Here is my published candidate statement.

I would appreciate your vote and, if elected, will strive to fulfill the value it represents. Thank you very much.

Serge Timacheff

Yeah that Serge Timacheff.

You can also read the thread in full here: http://www.fencing.net/forums/thread65840.html (yes there is a weird digression about pies in there).

I think the candidate statements are remarkably consistent.

So in the spirit of enlightened chat do we think it's possible to do something similar? What have we done right, what have we done wrong?

And if I'm wrong and we can't I'll just close the thread and chalk up hope to naivety.

The non fencing consultants presentation of Grow & Gold is up on b.f. Site.

All looks great ( apart from slightly jumbled presentation as my Tablet reads it )

However.. No where does it actually say 'how' to achieve the goals. The presentation is simply a flow diagram / bullet point analysis of the sport of fencing in the uk, with the ancillary information that ties it into UKsport prerogatives and the schools programmes.

The structure is no different than that which exists already ( apart from that regional hubs have superseded the national academy ).

The key questions therefor are;
HOW are the hubs to act as talent confirmation / training opportunities on their budget and within their operational limitations
HOW is the workforce to be developed differently from current delivery in such a way to impact on recruitment/retention/results

The question of WHY other non foil fencers are excluded is explicitly answered, but it has to be said that it is the club/personal coach that athletes return to and I personally, IMHO, don't think it is correct to sacrifice podium funding or similar assistance to highly talented (other weapon) athletes to satisfy a "programme". I think it is a vanity. Some such system as in Italy would be preferred. From this presentation it is clear that sportUK were availed of the notion that a single weapon programme was the way forward, probably by the PD's submission.

the hubs can only be successful if they can bring together large corps of fencers who are carefully streamed according to skill set, and are staffed by the best coaches. The executives' dismantling of the academy makes no sense in this context.

Workforce development can only move forward if it aims for compliance with uksports' coaches body, sportscoachUK, recommendations. It should be aiming for UKCC endorsement ( U.K.Coaching.certificate ) whereby our coach ed programme is recognised as fit for purpose. A study of judos' profile ( judo being a sport of comparable technical/tactical attributes ) gives relevant insights. For too long poor coaching standards have impacted on Recruitment/Retention/Results.

Happily the presentation does though show articulation between the 3Rs ( or between grow and gold if you like ) meaning hopefully we will continue to get some joined up thinking behind the programmes.   I am positive that as long as the board doesn't allow the executive to spend the pot on consultants fees as happened lately, that we should see more funds available to both;
PAY WC COACHES ; to attend camps and hubs and deliver coach ed cpd
PAY ATHLETES ; something towards accommodation, travel to help towards their goals of podium potential.

K.regards
M.kent
