A club member has reported back from the BYCs that some epeeists were accused of getting "air hits". These happened following a flicking action but with no contact.

Can anyone explain how these non-hits can register? What could the fault be with the epee and how can the club armourers check for this before competitions?

I am assuming that no Onischenko devices were present.

Point Control is a series of training days which have been established to provide high quality epee coaching for seniors, juniors and cadets through a series of friendly and inclusive training days.

This is a unique opportunity to enjoy high quality and cost effective coaching to supplement and support your club training in a non-partisan environment. Sessions are targeted at committed fencers of all standards who will benefit from learning alongside competitive fencers in a wider group than they will normally meet week to week at their club sessions.

You will need to bring a willingness to learn and the motivation to work!

The third training day is on the 22nd June 2013 at RGS Guildford School, Surrey

Tickets for new attendees open on 3rd May 2013

http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/event/6463912737

Our initial line-up comprises some of UKs leading epee coaches:

Facilitator
Jon Willis, facilitator – two time World Cup Winner

Double A Grade winner and Haverstock Training Camp organiser, Jon brings masses of practical experience of international fencing. He will be running a number of key sessions throughout the day, don't miss his footwork workout!

Coaches
Andy Pavaday, from Haverstock Fencing Club (organiser)

Andy Pavaday is a level five coach in all three weapons, having completed his BFA Hungarian based Diploma. He is a natural coach - calm, detailed and very patient. Andy coaches at Brixton Fencing Club on Wednesdays.

Neale Thomas, from LTFC, Redhill & Reigate and Tiger Swords

Since Neale qualified through the FIE coaching scheme he has been instrumental helping young epeeists qualify for the international circuit. He is also the father and coach of Gareth Thomas, currently ranked no 5 in GB.

Kamil Golisz from Brixton Fencing Club

Head Coach at Brixton Fencing Club, he develops fencers from novices to top ranked cadets and juniors. He sent three fencers to the World Championships in 2013, and provided half of the mens epeeists at both junior and cadet level for the European Championships too!

Pavel Rynes from Whitgift School

Head Coach at Whitgift School, Pavel is a highly valued coach and was part of British Fencing's National Academy.

Each coach will be responsible for no more than 8 fencers, and will provide each with a one-to-one lesson during the day, to enable this places are limited to 32 fencers on the day.

Details of the training schedule (which will not be for the faint hearted!) will be released shortly but includes:

Footwork

Skills workshops

Pair work

Scenario fencing

Core strength work

Rotation fencing

One to one coac

What fencers said about the last training day

About the coaching

"Very good! Really pleased - just wish we could have had longer."

"Great lesson. I have had a short lesson at my club from Andy when he visited as a coach and he is extremely patient but firm - he doesn't let you get away with anything..."

"Pavel has never given me a lesson before , therefore I was very impressed and happy with the way Pavel was able to identify problems with my fencing and teach me within the 30 minute period, new and better ways of doing things."

"an excellent lesson. Really couldn't fault it"

Kamil gave me one of the best lessons I have had.

About the strength and conditioning

"Hadn't come across these before, really enjoyed giving them a try. Looking forward to seeing if I can keep them going..."

"Ouch!"

What fencers liked most about the day

"The individual lesson. The enthusiasm of the leaders and the fencers. Great atmosphere. Loved that we were made to work to a good level but not beyond that - found it was pitched just right."

"Very social group and everyone was there to learn to be better. Very positive and reasonably good mix of fencers and age groups - a few more of us oldies would be good but to be honest a good diverse group."

"The lesson from Alex Agrenich, without a doubt. We covered a similar area to what my usual coach is working with me on - which is what I wanted - but he gave a whole other perspective on it, as well as advising very well on bad habits, not all of which my usual coach had picked up on. He continued to give good advice as the day went on after the lesson."

"David's footwork session"

"Scenarios"

"Very well structured and run. Got a lot of really useful fencing and got to fencer a lot of different fencers"

The verdict

"This is one of my ' best days fencing' ever, and the lesson was the best bit of the day. It has made me realise, ironically , that although I have personal issues with competing in individual competitons, I do really enjoy the training. Thank you very much to the organisers and coaches for putting on the day."

"Well tailored sessions for all ages."

"Really like the fencing scenarios that Georgina did - that was great and puts you more in a fight situation where you have to change tactics."

"Had a great day and excellent value for money and needed! I wish there were more of these rather than just the summer week long camps which is a bit hard to get past the wife to be honest!"

"Please do again soon."

The telling statistic...

100% of fencers who completed the questionnaire said they would recommend it to their club mates

I almost never step in with a parry because I'm so used to stepping away or keeping distance that I can't help it. What's the answer?
