Ryanair Cabin Baggage

"Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger...

Not sure how long this has been the case, but I have just seen this on the Ryanair conditions

"Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm* is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptops, shop purchases, camera etc). MUST be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage). IMPORTANT - Extra/oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of £60/€60. If you are unsure, check at the Bag Drop desk before going through security."

The point being the weight is still the same, but the dimensions are smaller dimensions. 20cm is about 7 inches. Having said they want to do away with hold baggage, Ryanair has reduced the dimensions of cabin baggage so that, if they enforce it, most bags will have to go in the hold.

Also the Ryanair rules say that laptop etc must be in your cabin baggage, but the likes of BA and KLM say it is an extra.

I have suggested to fencers in the past that they take their mask, shoes and other bits in cabin baggage in case their fencing bag doesn't make it. Unless you have a very flat head that does not seem possible on Ryanair now.

We always knew that this money grabbing airline would find a way to claw back to hidden charges he was forced to reduce. Maybe this is it.

They trade on offering a fairly downmarket product but at a low price however, having looked at a number of routes this summer, Ryanair is not actually a budget airline anymore.

I encountered a paper from BMJ recently on the topic.
http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/25/1/21.full.pdf

It's full of interesting factoids:

"Information on 36 of the 39 sports surveyed (92%) was sufficient for analysis. Twenty-two of these 36 sports
(61%) organized insurance at a national level, one at club level (3%) and 13 (36%) provided no insurance advice. Only 12 sports (33%) insisted on mandatory insurance cover. Many sportsmen and women are left to search for an appropriate insurance cover themselves or remain uninsured. Owing to the lack of advice in 36% of cases it was decided to survey ... insurance brokers to establish what type of policy they would recommend. Only 41% of the brokers were able to offer a suitable policy. Club policies recommended by the Central Council for Physical Recreation provide individuals with the same sports cover (but at a lower premium) as is available from a personal accident policy. However, cover is somewhat inadequate and may provide a false sense of security."

They give lots of info about which sports end up in which hospital department amking up what share of the workload, and then finish, saying:

"We feel it would be a responsible action of the national governing bodies of sports to make insurance mandatory at club level. This would provide support in the event of sports-related disablement for
members who would not otherwise be insured. We believe that all governing bodies of sports for Wales
should organize a suitable and adequate insurance policy to be taken out at club level on behalf of
members and that the premium be included in the dub membership fee. At present only a handful of
sports, seven of 36 (19%), have such a policy"

I had a sudden thought last night, that lots of the issues we have with what's going on at BF are because of our stupid outmoded views that, as BF is our membership organisation, we should be granted some sort of insight into what it's doing, how and why.

As I read BF's news release about Joanna Wray's appointment, all became clear. If they simply divorced the Performance programme from the membership body, much of the griping would stop. Because we'd have the remaining shreds of our illusion that BF is our body, run for our benefit, stripped from us.

No longer would we be seeing it as shadowy technocrats hired by our own representatives, making high-handed clandestine decisions, in such secret that they seem determined to prevent us finding out quite what.

It's this aspect which is driving us collectively crazy.

Once this new, non-membership body, went its own way, all of a sudden we'd view it as someone else (let's say, "Fencing-UK Sport") doing something for the UK's elite performance fencers. Perhaps well, perhaps badly, but nothing to do with us.

The rest of us would become members of Home Country Governing Bodies, and we could return to working out how to get fencing growing and developing at the grass roots, so that a few years from now we have some future candidates to feed into whatever the secretive "Fencing-UK Sport" are doing.

It is with deep sadness that I learn of the passing of Trevor Cox following illness. Trevor was a lifelong fencer, coached at his college in Croydon, was secretary of The Polytechnic Fencing Club and lately a member of Wimbledon Fencing Club. He was a member and staunch supporter of the BAF and will be missed by his many fencing friends.
Mass and funeral will take place in Croydon next Tuesday. His widow, Frances, requests no flowers but donations to Macmillan Cancer.
Please p.m. or e-mail me for any further information.

I'm pleading for the return of very distinctive breeches with a black dragon and Polish (white and red) flag on the back and a size 12 Nike sports bra.

I left them at the Uhlmann Trophy on the Saturday near the entrance of the hall, I have been getting in contact with organizers but nothing was left behind, so I'm assuming someone must've picked them up by mistake.
If anyone has seen them can you please contact me, they are very sentimental!
