Three cheers for Jenny Morris and her team at the Portsmouth LPJS. A lot of competiors in a lot of age groups, all completed by 5.30. Good-natured tournament and very enjoyable.
Totally agree a well run competition with a high standard of fencing in hedge group I was watching and the beautifully calligraphy on the certificates is a lovely touch
anyone got the results?
particularly the U11 girls foil...
May I add my Thankyou's to all the Portsmouth Team for another well event (just like the Hampster earlier in the year), really good volunteer refs, a great venue, lots of space, a convivial atmosphere, the fencers giving it their all, lovely displays of sportsmanship from all, some really exciting matches, boys U15 final especially, we'll be back next year, hopefully with a few more from the club who'll be venturing onto the circuit.
For you Abby, U11 girls top 4 results.
1st Emily Beardmore
2nd Phoebe Dawe
3rd Poppy James & Amanda Mond
Sorry I can't remember the rest of the order.
But a great day, again thankyou all.

Thanks very much to all at the Portsmouth LPJS. We have been going to this event for the last 8 or 9 years and its always been one of the better youth events of the year. The change to a far better venue (great cafe!!) and the use of the England Fencing carpet piests made it even better this year.
One little gripe, could I ask that all refs (particuarly at kids comps) try to phrase the calls a bit more and use correct hand signals. This would make things even better for fencers and parents alike.
On a more personal note I also want to thank all the Fighting Fit fencers and parents. Your hard work, dedication and sacrifice are a credit to you, your family and your club. To come home with an amazing medal haul of 5 golds and 2 bronzes shows that all your efforts have paid off! A special thanks to the families that all stayed right to the end to support our finalists. See you at training tonight
Jed
Instead of just a negative comment why not thank and praise the volunteer refs for their hard work and then suggest some improvements with reasons why. That way people might appreciate it as advice rather than just a criticism.
As for the competition, I would also heap praise on the organisers and the whole team involved. Great venue, well run with good referees. Many thanks.
Affiliated to the nearest pub!
I would like to thank all the refs who gave their time on Saturday, those who I had asked to come and those parents, coaches and supporters who volunteered on the day. Without every one of you we would not have been finished so early.
Hopefully we will be back at the same venue next year
First off - thanks to all the referees for their efforts. The competition wouldn't worked without them.
That said while most were excellent, a few did struggle a bit. Not least they could become muddled on which arm to wave when.
I guess the question is how we encourage people to refereee, while helping them improve. They do need feedback, though in an organised way, which certainly doesn't involve telling them they have made mistakes in the middle or even the end of the bout.
I believe the new referee committee is tackling this.
Has anyone got the results yet?
I am looking for the boys U13 results. Cheers
I hear it was a great, well run event, well done to the organisers.
I agree out of the 4 referees my son fought under 3 were absolutely fine (although the hall was a bit noisy and it was difficult to hear all the time.) One did struggle a bit and as you say during a bout is no time to tell them and I don't see it as a parents role to "correct" the referees either. It will be interesting to see what the referees committee come up with.
I would like to add my thanks to all involved. It was our third year and we liked the new venue. I hope it doesn't become a victim of it's own success and get too big.
On the whole reffing was pretty good though did see some odd decisions. I am pretty sure my daughter was given a hit which had come up as off target but missed the decision and only figured it out later when talking to her
Anyway managed to fit in ice cream at Lee on Solent, fish and chips and a trip to Ikea and home to London by midnight !
Not sure if results are still wanted (I also had several calls and emails asking) but as I now have a copy- please see below:
