    Default Student 5 Nations 2014

Results are starting to appear from Student 5 Nations, which is taking place at University of Ulster (Jordanstown) near Belfast. Sadly Wales decided not to send a team. ME, WF, MS contested this morning followed by WE, MF, WS in the afternoon.

Who was in charge of the welsh this year? I'd have been well up for it!

I'd like to know who was on the selecting committee for the Welsh team too as there were a more than one Welsh student attending a Welsh Uni (not necessarily in Cardiff Uni) who would have been happy to have gone if they'd been asked.

In recent years Ollie Olchart has been the main selector for Wales apart from sabre. But seeing that she's no longer a student and in a full time job I presume no one stepped up to take her place. It's a shame as there's some good fencers here and if we were really scraping bottom of the barrel I would have happily done it.

I'm talking to James Potter about next year, so hopefully this won't happen again!

Good call, as ever if there's anything I can do to help just let me know.

I have one of the potential Welsh Team upstairs right now tidying his room after 3 years at Cardiff. I know he did LUIF 2 weekends ago, Oxfam last weekend and didn't fancy the trip this weekend especially as he is graduating in a couple weeks.

No idea of the details around the lack of Welsh team - I know a few Welsh fencers at unis around the country who would have been thrilled to go. Hopefully something that can be looked at for next year.

Final standings were 1. England, 2. Scotland, 3. Northern Ireland, 4. Ireland.

ME: 1. England, 2. Ireland, 3. Scotland, 4. Northern Ireland
WE: 1. England, 2. Scotland, 3. Ireland, 4. Northern Ireland
MF: 1. England, 2. Scotland, 3. Ireland, 4. Northern Ireland
WF: 1. Northern Ireland, 2. Scotland, 3. England, 4. Ireland
MS: 1. England, 2. Scotland, 3. Northern Ireland, 4. Ireland
WS: 1. Scotland, 2. England, 3. Northern Ireland, 4. Ireland

(Please address any corrections c/o the S5N night out)

Swap NI and SCO around in WF and that's all correct.

I think Chris Wild was organising the Welsh team. I dont know why they had to pull out, but speaking as the England Capitan, We had a hard time getting the team (especially women) together because of the location and thus the expense of the travel. That might have been the cause of the drop out
This isn't fencing, this is SPARTA

Regardless of which nation is hosting, two or three squads are looking at a flight or a ferry, so it's disappointing that people weren't able to travel. I wasn't involved in any of the organising but got the impression that most teams had been more last-minute than usual this year.

Sorry to the Scottish foilists! Well done

I was just wondering where the next S5N is being held and who is organizing it? Also how is this decided?

    Thanks

I believe it is Ireland's turn next. The rota is England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales in theory. I agree that this needs to be confirmed ASAP and the organisier, whoever may take up the batten, should try and secure a date soon. I think the main issue people faced this year was not knowing the dates until relatively close to the event.

I've been in touch with the relevant people and I can confirm Ireland will be hosting next year's event.

The Irish captain and DT have already been in touch with each other. Even though I'm no longer a student or even selecting the team anymore, I'm quite excited about next year's event. The guys that are looking after it will be putting on a good show.
