    After doing three years of Sports Science and Nutrition at University - Whether an athlete should spit or swallow an isotonic, or hypotonic drink was the emerging research for intra-competition carbohydrate fueling (don't be fooled in thinking it's a form of hydrating). It's not really relevant to fencing because there is plenty of time to get a fix of energy from various sources in down time of a competition. This new school of thought is for those sports that need the 'energy' fix but would struggle to get a gel/sports drink etc., During their event.
